Dr. Neff’s first patients weren’t in a clinic. As a firefighter–paramedic in Janesville, Wisconsin, he learned medicine where it is most human: at the kitchen table, on the roadside, in the moments when showing up is everything.
That foundation — hands-on, unhurried, personal — still shapes how he practices today.
He is nationally recognized for anatomic enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP / AEEP) and Aquablation therapy — and as a national instructor, he trains the surgeons who bring these techniques to patients across the United States.

Building what’s next
Dr. Neff leads one of the first department-level AI adoption programs in academic urology. The goal is practical: tools that make surgical training sharper, research faster, and patient education clearer, built and tested inside a working surgical practice rather than bought off a shelf.
An AI-powered case preparation platform used daily by University of Kansas urology residents. It turns a single-screen case entry into a structured pre-operative briefing in under a minute, so residents walk into the operating room prepared to learn, not scrambling to catch up. Post-case debriefs feed an active research program on surgical education.
A literature search and retrieval tool built for how surgeons actually ask questions. It searches the urologic literature and pulls full-text evidence directly, cutting the distance between a clinical question and a sourced answer.
An interactive 3D anatomy application for patient education and resident teaching, built around the anatomic planes of prostate enucleation. Patients see exactly what their procedure does; trainees see the anatomy the way the surgeon does.
Principal investigator on AI-driven decision support for personalizing BPH care. Dr. Neff writes and speaks on the responsible adoption of AI in surgical practice, with a focus on tools that earn clinician trust through transparency and measured evidence.
